Why Las Vegas water spots so easily
The water comes mainly from the mineral-rich Colorado River, and the two minerals that make it hard are calcium and magnesium (Southern Nevada Water Authority). The SNWA lists hardness at about 280 ppm or 16 grains per gallon, and the water district at 291 ppm or 17 grains per gallon. Both call it "very hard."
When water dries on a faucet, a shower door or a countertop, those minerals stay behind as white spots and scale. The water district notes these effects are aesthetic and do not affect your health (LVVWD). So the design goal is simple: choose surfaces that hide spots and are easy to wipe clean.

Faucets and hardware. Brushed finishes hide water spots and smudges well, while shiny chrome highlights them (Bob Vila). We often specify brushed or matte finishes for the most-used faucets.
Shower glass. Some glass is sold with a protective coating applied during manufacturing, marketed to protect against hard water, heat and humidity (ShowerGuard by ShowerMan). We note the glass type in the design package so your contractor can price it.
Countertops and stone. Hard water tempts people to reach for vinegar, but the Natural Stone Institute warns that products with lemon, vinegar or other acids may dull or etch calcareous stones like marble, limestone and travertine (Natural Stone Institute). If you love marble, we can plan it where it gets less splashing, or choose a look-alike surface for the sink area.
Color and texture. Mid-tone and lightly textured surfaces hide white mineral spots better than glossy black or deep navy near sinks and showers.
What design can and cannot do
