In Las Vegas that means UV-stable cabinet finishes, matte or honed surfaces, brushed metals, textured mid-tone tile, and plaster, oak and stone that age gracefully. Plan window coverings and layered, dimmable lighting alongside the finishes.

Sun and fading

Las Vegas has abundant sunshine all year and triple-digit summers. Strong sun fades some woods, fabrics and painted finishes, especially near west-facing glass. Favor UV-stable finishes, stone and tile that do not fade, and plan window coverings as part of the design rather than an afterthought.

Glare

Polished counters and high-gloss cabinets bounce hard afternoon light around the room. Honed stone, matte tile, lime plaster and low-sheen cabinet finishes keep a kitchen calm at midday. Dimmable, layered lighting does the same at night.

Hard water
